About

Projected to be one of the largest solar farms in the United States, Sun Bear Solar will generate nearly 1,000 megawatts of clean energy and is located on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation in southwestern Colorado.

About Sun Bear Solar

Sun Bear Solar — a collaborative effort between the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe (UMUT) and Canigou Group — is set to be one of the largest solar farms in the United States. Located on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation in southwestern Colorado, the project aims to generate 971 megawatts (MW) of clean energy — enough to potentially power more than 250,000 homes during peak generation.

  • The UMUT Climate Action Plan goals to generate a long-term and predictable source of revenue, enable self-sufficiency, and reduce greenhouse gases (GHG)
  • U.S. federal goals to attain 100% carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050

Community Benefits

Sun Bear Solar will offer environmental, socioeconomic, and air quality benefits to the UMUT people and surrounding communities, and it will help protect the land and provide ongoing opportunities for future generations.

Environmental

Over 1,200,000 metric tons of CO2 will be displaced every year, decreasing overall greenhouse gasses in the Four Corners region. This equates to:

  • 378,488 passenger vehicles driven for one year
  • 214,363 homes’ energy use for one year
  • 2,028,279 acres of U.S. forests sequester emissions in one year

Socioeconomic

Sun Bear will provide:

  • Up to 1,000 construction jobs and 10-50 full-time jobs
  • UMUT employment opportunities and income from lease payments
  • A long-term and predictable source of revenue for UMUT, helping to fund programs, develop jobs, and increase educational opportunities

Air Quality

Reliance on renewable energy over fossil fuels will lead to beneficial, long-term improvements to air quality
